The Fires of Israel

Chapter 33: R' Shlomo Wexler

R' Shlomo Wexler

R' Shlomo Wexler o.b.m. I saw by R' Shlomo'n (Wexler o.b.m.) - - I was jealous of him – I saw how he eats – without any movement of falsehood (*See Likutay Moharan, Torah 60 regarding chain <charm> of falsehood)! Entirely true! He sat, one person alone at home, and ate with holiness and purity - - just like a bird, a little piece – he inserted it and held it in his mouth until it dissolved, and afterwards he swallowed it, and like this again - - I didn't understand how he lives?! - - * - - Even I myself, that I received the entire matter, I should have to have a good life with the note (-the Petek), different than the rest of the world, and I look at myself – such eating, with such sleeping, with such praying…. * The R' Shlomo – he was always sitting, by day and by night, and serving HY – Torah and prayer! He did not have any family – he had a b”b (?), and when he was old he had two orphaned grandchildren. This R' Shlomo did not have any children, and he had miraculously – he had a daughter, and the daughter – I remember – would come to R' Shlomo'n, she was a big tzaddekes (-righteous woman), she would stand on her feet with a holy book, she would pray and learn, she was bright like (Heb: similar to) R' Shlomo'n… In any event, the daughter got married, and had twins, and she – not on us – passed away in childbirth, and the twins remained. When I would come to Jerusalem – when I would come into R' Shlomo'n – it was by a him a joyous occasion like a wedding, how [this R' Shlomo] his face radiated – the joy – it was such! What is [it]? I knew (“recognized”) R' Yisroel'n! He heard what happened with me…. I ate with him by the table [- she never once at with him by the table, she ate alone – she was never once by the table]. He took such small pieces – because he didn't want to feel a taste of any… - so he inserted a small piece of challah and a small piece of fish, and he didn't chew! It lay in his mouth, and we spoke, and it lay in his mouth – and he swallowed it, and he took another piece, and so it was a few times. I thought to myself, “how can the body endure?!”… He accustomed the (-his) stomach, his stomach was already accustomed to such a type of eating… (*See Words of Rabbi Nachman, article 246, “I was looking at his eating, and he was aiming not to let the food enter inside the mouth and palate, he would just bring it inside between his teeth, and he would chew it there without help of the palate, and whoever eats like that, has almost no feeling of taste in his eating, and it is impossible to describe this matter in writing, but the reader will understand this by himself. And whoever wants to utterly break the desire of eating, so as not to receive any enjoyment from his eating, through this pointer he can easily merit to this.” See also Praise of Rabbi Nachman, article 21, how Rabbainu regulated his stomach to a minimal consumption (Life of Our Leader Rabbi Nachman, 92). And see Likutay Halachos, Orach Chaim, Laws of Prayer 4:6) [Just] to look at his visage, his speech - - Rabbi Chaim Sonnenfeld (-The Av Bais Din – Chief Magistrate of the Aidah Hacharaidis – the Haredi Congregation of Jerusalem) had derech eretz (-formal respect, like standing up in honor) before him! Rabbi Chaim was really a Litvak (-of the Lithuanian school, which favored the study of Talmud over everything), and by a Litvak – whoever can learn more, whoever is more knowledgeable, more of a lamdan (-skilled scholar) – and R' Shlomo was a lamdan, he had nothing to be ashamed of before Rabbi Chaim'en…. This Rabbi Chaim Sonnenfeld would pray vasikin (-at sunrise) in the (synagogue of the neighborhood of) Butay Machseh, and R' Shlomo also prayed vasikin, they saw each other every day, and Rabbi Chaim held of R' Shlomo'n - - he (Rabbi Chaim) was the head of the Aguda, there was Rabbi Moshe Blau with others - - R' Shlomo was by him a “chad <one> bidura <in a generation>”! R' Shlomo was by him – holy of holies! He didn't have another (“a second”) like R' Shlomo! R' Shlomo did not have derech eretz (-formal respect) before him… there was a conflict on Rav Kook, and it was necessary that he should go out strong (against him), if he did not come out as strong as it was necessary – so R' Shlomo had no derech eretz (-formal respect) for Rabbi Chaim'en…. * R' Yisroel was a different world, R' Yisroel was - - his meseeras nefesh (-self sacrifice), and his common sense (/straight <direct and honest> intellect), his hisbodidus. So R' Shlomo would krechtz (-groan) – R' Shlomo would say to me, “Where does one get (/take) R' Yisroel's avoada (devotion)?!” *** [Returning to the matter of the letter – the Petek – from Rabbainu o.b.m.] Everything – when one looks with an honest eye, from the beginning of the note (-the Petek), from the first word, and further on in order – there is what to be learned as a study. In truth, I already spoke a lot of this, and why again and again - - a hairbreadth more is already completely something else! * In the note (-the Petek) – there is only one aleph which screams out about the “Rav and disciple” (*Likutay Moharan, Torah 6:5 – correlate to the upper and lower appendages of the aleph), “ailechu <to you – the first letter of this word is an aleph>” - such an aleph, the vav (-the Hebrew letter vav is basically a vertical line – and the diagonal line of the aleph is called a vav) with the two dots (-the aleph is a diagonal line with one dot above it and one dot below it) screams epes (-some, somehow) out a call, a proclamation…. By Rebbe'n is it possible to say?! - What type of relevance does a person like me have by Rebbe'n?! We see how the holy Rebbe can write to Yisroel Ber'n, “my precious student” - embedded in this is such a type of encouragement! “My precious student” - these two words, it could have been without these two words! “To come down to you <omitting the words “my precious student”> to tell you that I had great pleasure from your devotions!” “I had great pleasure,” the “great (-a lot, very much)” - there are no extra words written like in a letter one writes what he wants, this is not so! Every word is a “nachal <brook> noavaya <gushing>!” There are implanted in this amazing things! Just when one goes with truth, not to be smart in his own eyes, because when one is wise in his own eyes, one can make of this a laytzunoos (-mockery) - - If one looks well, one sees – for example, “And upon you I said my fire will burn until Messiah is coming – be strong and courageous in your avoada <devotions>,” the writing of “in your avoada” still appertains to the previous line, and “be strong and courageous” is a different world, it is a matter of itself (-Saba is pointing out how the Petek should have written “be strong and courageous in your devotion” altogether in its own line after finishing the matter of “until Messiah is coming.” Whereas the Petek allocated a whole line just for the one (Hebrew) word “in your avoada” and kept the words “be strong and courageous” as a run on after “until Messiah is coming.”). * There are people whom when they see such a thing, they can think of me that this is somehow (/something) from me (“my side” - due to my own merit) – it is forbidden to be like that! This is forbidden to be! This note (-The Petek) is not from (-in the merit of) my frumkeit (-devoutness), from my righteousness, from my wisdom! This is such a thing that the holy Rebbe - “It was very difficult for me to come down to you” - this is a lesson for each and every one! Because if the holy Rebbe wrote this just for me alone, he would write that I should not reveal it to a stranger, and that is not written – so it is apparent that the desire of Rebbe'n is that they should know, whoever desires – “he who desires to hear will hear, and he who desires to abstain will abstain (Ezekiel 3:27).” Here is set an amazing light of revelation of the Divine which is unfathomable! Which is from Rebbe'ns novelties! This is really such a novelty that there has yet to be heard of such a thing from anyone! * I was by R' Yisroel'n – R' Yisroel knew everything that transpired to our men whom were drawn close to Rebbe'n – everything. Such a thing he never heard… I am just in wonder how I appear after such a revelation – a revelation of the Divine, which others don't know what I know. I know well all the circumstances (-causes which brought it about), this is really completely something else - - * - - When I showed it to R' Shlomo (Wexler o.b.m.), and R' Shlomo was a man of truth, such a thing which is a novelty! And if he had epes (-somehow/something) doubts in this, he would have said to me, “Get yourself out of such things, you should not take in to (-pay heed? Involve?) yourself!” And he received it “bidicheeloo <with fear/awe> ooricheemoo <and love> (-of HY – this is what one says when preparing to do a mitzva)!” With truth! And he read it I know how many times, and he found that the first (Hebrew letter) nuen (-”Na”) is epes (-somehow/somewhat) different, that is what he told me. Now I gave it my attention and I saw that all the (Hebrew letter) nuens (-the first letters – acronym - of Na Nach Nachma Nachman) – each nuen is a different type of nuen! Yeah, theses three nuens (-second, third, and fourth) are not the same (-as the first, and not to one another). * Practically speaking, what is here in this name – single <Na> double <NaCh> triple <NaChMa> quadruple <NaChMaN> - this is impossible to comprehend! We have never heard of a (person of) flesh and blood that signed like this, with a single double triple quadruple – only in the letter (-The Petek) it is written that way! And here are the ten letters – the Rebbe'ns name, single double triple quadruple is exactly ten letters, this alludes to the ten types of melodies (*See Likutay Moharan, Torah 49:5, “And this is the aspect of the song with will be aroused in the future, and it is a song single double triple quadruple, and they are ten types of melody etc..” And see also volume 2, Torah 24, and what is pertinent to this in the Words of Rabbi Nachman, article 273, “And see the end of the Story of the Seven Beggars, there are slight hints of the importance of the melody, because it is explained there, that the main healing of the Queen's Daughter who fell down faint is through melody, that is, through the ten types of melody as is explained there, see there. And understand well the extent to which these matters reach. Because also the holy neshama (soul) of each one of Israel is called “bas <daughter of the> melech <king>” as is known, and she is located in the place where she is located by each and every one, tired, and exhausted, and faint from her sins, which are the ten types of arrows which the king who caught her threw and shot into her, as is explained there. And we need a tzaddik who possesses great power who can enter into all the places where she fell, and extract from her all the ten types of arrows, and know all the ten types of pulses, in order to know what is necessary to heal her, and to play all the ten types of melodies etc..”), and of the Tikun Haklali (-General/Comprehensive Rectification which consists of Ten Psalms representing the ten types of melodies) (*See Likutay Moharan, Torah 205, and volume 2, Torah 92, “Because the ten chapters of Psalms correlate the ten types of melody which with the Book of Psalms was said, which are: Bracha <blessing>, Ashray <fortunate>, Maskil <intelligent> etc.. Because the ten types of melody mentioned above have the power to nullify the power of the (evil) husks and the defect mentioned above etc..”), and so forth and so forth - - However, never (/in general), did we find a (person of) flesh and blood, from the day of the creation of the world, a tzaddik who would sign with such a method, single double triple quadruple, this is (found) only by the holy names of Hashem Yisburach! (*See Likutay Moharan Torah 49, and volume 2, Torah 8, “And this is (Isaiah 58), 'Raise your voice like a shofar', 'like a shofar' specifically, because this voice that waters the Garden, which is the aspect of (Genesis 2), “and a river goes out from Eden,” is the aspect of the voice of the melody of the song which will be aroused in the future when He will renew His world, which is the aspect of the song single double triple quadruple. And this is 'like a shofar <KaShoaFaR> acronym: Pushoot <single – the Hebrew letter Pay can also be pronounced Fay> Kufool <double> Shuloosh <triple> Rivoo'a <quadruple>, which is the aspect of the song of the future etc..” And in volume 2, Torah 67, “'A river goes out of Eden', it is the aspect of 'tzaddik yesoad <foundation of> oalum <the world> (Proverbs 10:25)' etc.. Because when this tzaddik is revealed and is famous in the world, this is the aspect of “Shaim <name>,” that is, that he becomes famous and he has a name in the world, and set in the name of the true tzaddik is dressed and partnered His Name blessed He, because His name is partnered in our name (Jerusalem Talmud Taanis Chapter 2, Rashi on Joshua 7, Jeremiah 14, and Yalkut on Joshua 7, and see the preceding Torah – 2:66), therefore when the name of the tzaddik is made greater, His Name blessed He is made greater, and all that the name of the tzaddik is made more great, His Name blessed He grows greater so to speak, because His name is partnered in our name as mentioned above.” And see Koachvay Ohr, section of Chuchma and Beena, article 30, “because it was he who merited to grasp and unite with the awesome throne who will sing the song of the pleasantness of his conception of the Divine, on seventy two strings, single double triple quadruple [Y-YH-YHV-YHVH=72] etc..” And see the Life of Our Leader Rabbi Nachman, article 340, “I heard in his name, that he said on his final Rosh Hashana, 'I have a melody to sing in the future which will be the Future World for all the tzaddikim and the chassidim (-pious)', and this is germane to the discourse brought above which I heard myself. And see in the Torah “Tikoo <sound the shofar> Toachuchu <of rebuke> (Likutay Moharan, volume 2, Torah 8, cited above)” which he said close to his passing, there it speaks of the melody of seventy two strings etc.. And see the Story of the Sixth Day of the Seven Beggars.”). Rabbainu Hakadosh: I Am A Secret From The Whole World Oy vay – we need to wake up, we need to tell one another from the matter of the holy Rebbe'n – from the matter of the light of the holy Rebbe, that the holy Rebbe is a secret – a secret from the world! That is – we are still not such great men that for us he isn't a secret, just Rabbi Nussun – Rabbi Nussun knows a little. (*See Avunehu Barzel, Seechoas and Stories of Rabbainu o.b.m., article 10, “Rabbainu the holy tzaddik o.b.m. said, “The same way those who dispute me do not know from me, in the same way those who hold of me also do not know from me, except Nussun Naftoli a little.” (T.N. Elsewhere Saba discusses how it is not clear whether “a little” is going only on Naftoli or also on Nussun, and he decides that by Rabbi Nussun there are aspects of both readings). And regarding this, see the introduction to The Life of Our Leader Rabbi Nachman, and Ullim Litrufah, letter from Rabbi Nussun, from Sunday, Torah Portion of Vayikra 5586 (1826), and in the introduction to Ullim Litrufah, “And even still because of the great hiddenness and concealment which was upon him in this world, in the way of (Chagiga 12a), “'And G-d saw the light that it was good (Genesis 1)' – to put away in concealment,” therefore also his disciples who were drawn close to him did not merit to know and attain conception, even the slightest of the slight, from him o.b.m., to what extent reached out the awesomeness of the tremendous height of his holiness and conception (“hasaga”) o.b.m. Except upon one of his prime disciples, he is our teacher the tzaddik the holy etc. the rav Rabbi Nussun o.b.m. for the life of the future world, upon him Rabbainu o.b.m. himself testified that he (Rabbi Nussun) has a little knowledge and conception of his great height, as this is explained a little elsewhere.”), however, we - - the secret is from us as well, we do not know, because if we would know from this secret we would be completely something else! - - - R' Yisroel – he was unique in the world, a “chad <one> bidura <in a/the generation>,” he was unique among the Breslover chasidim! Why is this?! Because he unearthed the secret! He merited to know from the secret! More than us! And similarly it is a secret from us the Toaroas (-holy teachings) of Likutay Moharan, for us it is a secret, and the holy Rebbe'ns greatness is a secret for us – even though we know (of him) - - and the Likutay Tefilos is a secret. Because if it wasn't a secret, we would be learning the Toaroas completely differently, and saying the prayers differently, and it would be such a type of light – and the entire world would run after us! Just what then?! We sleep! We do not see the secret! (*See Life of Our Leader Rabbi Nachman, article 246, “And similarly, one time I heard from him himself o.b.m. that he said 'biressess oovizaya <with trembling and sweating – intense fear of Heaven>', 'behold you know the nature of the world now, behold if the world wouldn't be like this, I would be a novelty.' That is to say, that if the physicality and coarseness of the current affairs of the world wouldn't hide and conceal him so much, everyone would see his dramatic awesomeness, that he is a wondrous, awesome, and supreme novelty.”) The holy Rebbe said, “I am a secret from the world!” (*See Life of Our Leader Rabbi Nachman, article 579, “But what my matter is, this no person knows.” And there, article 83, “And all that is found in our words, any praise of Rabbainu the extremely holy and awesome o.b.m., it is necessary to know, that it is considered as nothing, and isn't even a drop in the ocean, because it is absolutely impossible to tell over his praise, because he was hidden in the uttermost hiddenness from human intellect. And even great tzaddikim cannot perceive a little of his height, and we do not have any perception or grasp of him whatsoever, except through the scant wondrous Toaroas which he revealed in his holy books, and the wondrous stories which are brought here, and from this it is possible for each one, according to what his heart can fathom, to understand slightly less than a little the extent of the reach of his lofty power and his holiness to no end, fortunate is the son of woman who merited to such a height which goes higher and higher, what the mouth is not capable to speak nor the heart to think.” And in The Life of Our Leader Rabbi Nachman of Rabbi Naftoli the tzaddik o.b.m., in manuscript, in the introduction, “And the matter was repeated twice and thrice, because everything that is explained here, isn't even like a drop of the ocean of the his great and awesome praises, because his praise is truly hidden from the eye of all life, because he was utterly concealed and hidden, and the tzaddik resembles his Creator etc., therefore it is permissible to say of him what Eliyahu said to Hashem Yisburach (Introduction to Tikunay Hazohar 17a), 'there is no one that knows of You at all,' and everything that we merited to know and perceive, a miniscule little of his greatness, and of his praises, and from the utter dramatically extreme preciousness of the holiness of his eminence, is just in the aspect of “muttee <reaching> vilow muttee <and not reaching>” etc., and he forced himself with all types of forces to reveal himself a little in the world, so that the Children of Israel would be able to imbibe a little from him, in order that the light should not be hidden completely etc..”) Whoever applies himself more, and whoever puts aside his cunning, and seeks the truth, and has meseeras nefesh (-self sacrifice), he doesn't look upon his honor and upon his money – as it should be – when there will be found today such a thing, the whole world would run after such a Rebbe'n! Yeah! It would make an uproar in the world! One, one person in the entire world would make an uproar!…. And for us it is also a secret - - for the world it is even more secret, however, for us it is also a secret! Because when this is not a secret, and we would take the Likutay Tefilos, and we would go have hisbodidus, and we would have battles with tenacity – that we get out of this world, from the desires of this world!! - - When there are such prayers with such Toaroas – how can one be [drawn] to this world?! Nu, R' Yisroel – every day of the (-his) fifty years was a novelty! Why is that?! Because he felt the secret! He felt the Rebbe'ns Toaroas, with the prayers, with every word of the Rebbe'n – because he put aside his cunning completely, and he had meseeras nefesh (-self sacrifice) so that he could imbibe from Rebbe'n! (Someone: The rule that it is necessary to get out of the vanities of this world in order to merit - - ) Ah! Ah!!! Yeah yeah! This is harder than everything! (Someone: What did R' Yisroel do that he merited to come to this?) - So that he achieved this?! He put away his cunning (“saichel” - intellect)! He merited to such a type of faith in the sages (“emoonas chachumim”) in the holy Rebbe'n, so he was entirely something else! (*See The Life of Our Leader Rabbi Nachman, article 320, “He said, anyone who listens to me, and fulfills everything I command, certainly he will be a great tzaddik, be what may, and the main thing is to cast away one's cunning (“saichel” - intellect) completely, just as he (Rabbainu) says fulfill everything as he said. And he said then the matter of 'A nation which is nuvul (-ingrate/receiver of the Torah) and not wise (-cunning)' as explained in Likutay Moharan, Torah 123.”). Rabbi Nussun the tzaddik o.b.m. The holy Rebbe had many disciples, universal greats. By Rebbe'ns disciples there were kabalists, they were tzadikim and kedoashim (-holy), 'men of truth who hate dishonest gain (Exodus, Yisro 18:21)!' This, one doesn't see – this, one sees only by the holy Rebbe'n! He can make such! But nevertheless compared to Rabbi Nussun - - no one, there never came up to Rabbi Nussun! The Rebbe had a disciple, Rabbi Aaron Breslover – Rabbi Aaron the Rav of Breslov, of whom the holy Rebbe said about him such great things – but (even still) there was never anyone who came up to Rabbi Nussun! This was a “Rebbe with a Talmid (-disciple)” from the Six Days of Creation – which such “a Rebbe with a Talmid” has yet to be in the world! (*See Koachvay Ohr, Chuchma and Beena, article 41, and Chuchma and Tevuna, end of article 21, “Because it is the Rav and the Talmid that they beheld and looked upon them from the day of the creation of the world until now etc.”) The holy Rebbe had disciples – R' Yudel (-from Dushiv o.b.m.) was a miracle worker, he was a kabalist, but Rabbi Nussun was - - What we learn out from this – that Rabbi Nussun saved us, he knew from Rebbe'n more than all the disciples, and he so much surpassed them, and he merited that he made such books – every word of his saves us! - - The letters, the Ullim Litrufa (“Leaves for Healing” - collected letters of Rabbi Nussun) – when I take the Ullim Litrufa I can't hold back – I take it to (my) mouth and am kissing (it) and kissing… this saved me! Every word – from every letter! (*See the letter from the 11th of Tishray 5593 (Friday, October 5, 1832) where he writes to his son, “And you should show these letters to our fellow men who desire the truth, and return and hide them by you, because they are precious things and they need to be guarded, because they will be needed with the help of Hashem Yisburach to give life to many souls with His great kindness blessed He.” And in the letter from Sunday, Torah Portion of Kedoshim 5591 (1831), “Because I put my hope in Hashem that our letters will be precious in the days to come with the help of Hashem Yisburach, because all of them revolve on the central point of the real truth, to yearn and long for Hashem, and His Torah, and for the true tzaddikim, and for their holy ways etc..”). *** (Saba Yisroel asks someone, “Your brother – have you epes (somewhat/somehow) spoken with him? Was there epes (something/somehow) of a change by him in his drawing close to the holy Rebbe'n?” - The person replies, “epes yeah, probably epes yeah.”) – Nu, it doesn't go in one time! When the mind is poisoned – when the mind is poisoned, we are poisoned with opposition – such. I had miracles – I grew up from infancy in Karlin (-a sect of chasidus), by me Karlin stood higher than everything – Rabbi Muttel (-Kastelnitz – Slunimer o.b.m., the da'yan (judge) and leader of the Slunim Chasidim, Slunim is very closely affiliated with Karlin) was by me like a father, I held of him like an angel, he was also a novelty, he was also a very big lamdan (-skilled scholar), a person with fear of Heaven. His eating was not like that of a coarse (/simple) person. And his sleeping – always when he would wake up from sleeping he would make koaloas (-shout out) to Hashem Yisburach that he should awaken. He only learned, he didn't know from Rebbe'n, he was still a misnaged (-antagonist). Nu, I had miracles - - - *** Na NaCh NaChMu NaChMaN Mai'Uman Na Nach Nachma Nachman MeUman!
